Job Description

Contract Opportunity: Senior Specialist – State Paid Family Leave & Disability Compliance

Location: Remote (U.S.) | Duration: ~4 Months | Status: Contract

Are you a compliance strategist who thrives on building programs from the ground up? Do you have a passion for decoding complex state leave laws and turning them into clear, actionable policy? We’re looking for an experienced professional who can own this space — from in-depth regulatory analysis to policy design and team enablement.

This is a rare opportunity to make a real impact across a multi-state organization. You’ll step into a high-visibility role that directly supports senior leadership, with the autonomy to craft solutions that will shape the future of leave and disability compliance.

What You'll Do

Lead Compliance Strategy & Policy Development

  • Serve as the go-to expert for multi-state Paid Family Leave and Short-Term Disability compliance.
  • Audit existing leave practices across a diverse employee population spanning nearly all U.S. states.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement policies that ensure long-term compliance with current and future regulations.
  • Anticipate legislative changes and advise leadership on their implications.

Build & Empower HR and Payroll Teams

  • Create practical frameworks and tools for HR and payroll to manage eligibility, employee rights, and notification requirements.
  • Deliver training and hands-on guidance to ensure team readiness and consistency across state lines.
  • Set up and maintain state-specific accounts as needed for benefits administration.

Deliver Strategic Value

  • Provide actionable insights to help leadership make informed decisions about leave policies and workforce planning.
  • Help lay the groundwork for a scalable compliance infrastructure — including documentation, processes, and a reference hub (e.g., SharePoint) for future use.

What You Bring

Must-Have Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in HR compliance, regulatory affairs, or employment law with a focus on state leave and disability programs.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in multi-state compliance (paid family leave, paid sick/safe time, PTO carryover, disability programs, etc.).
  • Strong communicator with the ability to translate complex regulations into plain language and strategic action.
  • Comfortable working autonomously in a high-trust environment while also collaborating with stakeholders across departments.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.

Preferred

  • Experience working with HR and payroll systems and building knowledge-sharing tools (e.g., SharePoint).
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Law, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with FMLA and federal leave regulations.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Autonomy + Impact – You’ll have the freedom to lead your own work and the chance to influence policy across an entire organization.
  • Strategic Role – Not just compliance execution; this is about building smarter systems that scale.
  • Short-Term, High-Value – Make a meaningful contribution in just a few months — with clear outcomes and deliverables.
