Fire Watch

Job Summary

Observes for sparks and flames during welding and works as a laborer to assist trades; sweeps, hoses and performs tasks related to clean up on-board ship, in drydock, on piers and throughout the shipyard. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualification Standards

  1. High school graduate or GED with prior experience preferred.
  2. Ability to read and write (in English) and understand verbal instructions required.
  3. Requires observation skills, ability to respond quickly, housekeeping skills, good judgement and on-going safety awareness. Must be able to access and move around ship safely, work at heights and in confined areas with limited visibility.
  4. Must be clean shaven for respirator fit (modest moustache is fine).
  5. Adhere to all safety & PPE requirements.

Essential Job Tasks

  1. Assists in setting up equipment, including helping the hot worker running leads, hoses, operation of air and electric power tools; moves metal pieces for re-fitting; removes scrap from work area.
  2. Moves fire bottle to areas of work; observes for sparks from fitting, welding and grinding; extinguishes fire when necessary.
  3. Maintains a clean, hazard-free work area.
  4. Assure that tank/compartment has an updated Marine Chemist Certificate or Competent Person Ticket and the requirements of the ticket have been met.
  5. Assure that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written.
  6. Assure that tank/compartment has Hot Work Chit posted with the correct location number and proper signatures.
  7. Assure you check for combustible material within 35 ft. of hot work in either the horizontal or vertical direction. If it cannot be removed, it should be protected with flame proof covers or otherwise shielded with metal.
  8. Assure that personal protective equipment is worn on the job site at all times.
  9. Assure that you are properly positioned per Hot Work Operator's instructions.
  10. Assure that you establish communication procedures with Hot Work Operator to start and stop hot work in case of fire or if an emergency occurs.
  11. Assure that fire extinguishers are fully operational and within reach while hot work is in progress.
  12. Assure that you have a clear view and immediate access to all areas associated with hot work operations.
  13. Assure that you do not leave your station without notifying Hot Work Operator while hot work is in progress.
  14. Assure that you observe 30 minute cool down after completion of hot work.
  15. Assure that you attempt to extinguish the fire during incipient stage, notify your Hot Work Operator, and if unable to extinguish the fire, to evacuate the space and notify the OOD on the quarter deck.
  16. Assure that you maintain a clean work area to maximize the fire protection efforts.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

You will be required to handle Fire retardant material, hoses, leads, cleaning equipment and supplies, lights, fire bottle. You may be required to handle Metal, wood, scaffold subsection, bolts, clips, hand tools, cable lines and rope lines. Mandatory Fire Watch training required, which will be administered during Safety Orientation.

Physical/Mental Involvement

Lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; standing, walking, climbing/balancing, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crawling, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing and speaking. Understanding written and verbal directions, recognizing and avoiding potential safety hazards, following established safety procedures.

Environmental Factors

Works 50% of the time inside, 50% outside, on board ship, drydock, balanced on scaffolding in shipyard. Exposed to wind, heat, constant wet and humid conditions, vibrations; works near constantly moving machinery, mechanical parts and traffic from other trades. Exposed to fumes, odors, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals. Exposed to constant loud machinery noise.
